Week 36 4/26/2019

Language Arts: I read some more of the story that is part of my L. Arts program. I also wrote some more of the body paragraphs from my notes about Brazil.

Math: I did a chapter in the Algebra textbook and we also got some more homework from our tutor to work on. He really wants us to master the concepts we have been working on. We weren’t able to have class with him this week because he had to go to the doctor.

Science: We watched the next episode in Cosmos. It talked about the speed of light and how telescopes allow us to see back in time because of how long it takes light to reach us from far away. At HeeHaws we learned about dairy products and about the multiple stomachs of cows.

History: We listened to the intro of Story of the World Vol 1. It talks about how we know what happened in the past. We use both written records and also archaeology, which looks at objects that people leave behind.

Makerspace (Tech): This week I finished my clock. I had already assembled it so I had to take it apart a little so I could paint it. Then I painted it. I couldn’t bring it home yet, though.

Programming (Elective): On code.org I finished Functions in Artist exercises. I also did the first couple of exercises for Determine the concept.

Other: We had our last week of co-op for this semester. We also had a field trip to HeeHaws with some members of our co-op. We also went to Avengers: Endgame on Friday. My mom had already seen it on Thursday night with my dad, but she took most of us kids on Friday. My older sister couldn’t come because she had school. I had two basketball practices but we had an off week from having a game. I got to go to Night of Gaming at my friend's school. It was a fundraiser. We had fun. They had lots of different types of games, board games and video games, you could play.

Week 26 2/15/2019

Language Arts: In one of my co-op classes we learned about similes and metaphors. We came up with some of our own. I had to write my own fable for my writing assignment at home. Then I typed it up. We also did some more reading in the reader and some of my dyslexia handbook lessons as well. Math: Worked a lot on exponents and square roots and other roots this week. Worked on being able to pull out the squares and rewrite problems to be able to solve them more easily. History: We discussed the song The Day the Music Died in my co-op class. At home we listened to the next episode of Podcast History of our World about Egypt. One interesting thing was that the guy who united Upper and Lower Egypt made a new crown that was a combination of the two crowns. I thought it was cool that they fit together so well. We also celebrated Charles Darwin's birthday with our usual tradition of Darwin Day Donuts. Science: We watched some science videos this week. One interesting one was about whether fish pee. Ocean (salt water) fish hardly pee at all, but freshwater fish pee all the time. It is all about needing to maintain the right level of salts in their body. Makerspace (Tech): We cut out the shapes we are going to do for our woodcarving. I am going to do the mini cooper logo. Programming (Elective): I didn’t do any programming this week. In my Survival class we learned how to make rope out of different fibers. Other: We didn’t have a basketball game this week but we did have practice. I went skiing with my dad and sister.

Week 23

Language Arts: I am reading the second book in the Unwind series, called Unwholly. I did a couple lessons in my language arts program and did some writing. I am in a class at co-op that is learning about figurative language as well and we had the first class this week.

Math: We practiced solving linear equation pairs by graphing. Worked on solving long problems with lots of signs and parentheses as well.

Science: This week we watched some Brain Pop videos about the ocean, plate tectonics, and volcanoes. We started our next semester of co-op and made soda can stoves in my survival class.

History: In my co-op history class we learned about Disneyland and when it was built. It didn’t do well when it first opened. Too many people came and they weren’t actually ready but said they were.

Makerspace (Tech):  No Makerspace this week because of MLK Jr holiday.

Programming (Elective): We had another practice for the FLL strategic tournament. It is next week on February 2nd. We also brought one of the tables home so we could work on our missions more.

Other: I went skiing with my grandma, my dad, and my sister. I had a basketball game and got a lot of rebounds and some good blocks.

Week 25 3/2/2018 Weekly Report

Language Arts - This week I did another keyword outline and wrote up my paragraph on
the topic of rotten teeth and early false teeth. I’m glad we have dentists now who can repair
teeth! They used to get teeth from dead people to use as replacements. I also had a spelling
lesson, did TTRS lessons, and started reading the book Ready Player One. My mom will
take me to the movie when it comes out if I read it, and it looks like a cool movie.

Math - In Math Mammoth 7 I did a review of Scientific Notation and went over PEMDAS
(order of operations) with Rational Numbers. I also did fact practice on XtraMath and
worked on Hands on Equations 3.

Makerspace - I was sick Monday so I wasn’t able to make it to Makerspace.

Art - I finished my colored pencil butterfly project. I put a picture of it below. It’s pretty
small, only about 4x4 inches or so.

Science - In my co-op Mystery Science class we learned about potions and alchemists of a
long time ago. We tested different solutions (salty water, soapy water, vinegar, and salt/vinegar)
to see which one worked to make a dull penny shiny. Only the salt/vinegar mixture worked.

In my co-op Biology class we did a frog dissection. We worked in groups of 3 and identified
the different organs inside the frog. My friend did the cutting and I watched.

In Uzinggo I learned about the carbon cycle. Carbon in the air goes into the plants, which in
turn are eaten by animals. Eventually those animals die and their carbon can become fossil
fuels which get burned by power plants which releases carbon back into the air. Also animals
breathing releases carbon into the air, too. So the carbon just cycles around and around.

Other - I had another post-season basketball game. We won so we play again next week. I
scored 8 points.

This one shows the shiny penny better than the other one, but this group lost their salty water one.

All of the shiny pennies used to be really dull and dirty looking. This is in the Salt & Vinegar mixture.

Week 14 - 12/1/2017 - Weekly Report

Language Arts - For my speech and poetry class at co-op I memorized and recited the English Folk Verse The Fifth of November. I think it is the longest poem I have ever memorized. I also made my demonstration speech of How to Make a Monkey Fist into a video and presented that to the class. I wrote a journal entry about Thanksgiving. I read more in Death Cure and reread a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book that I like. I also did two spelling lessons and my TTRS lessons.

The Fifth of November
(English folk verse)
   Remember, remember!
   The fifth of November,
   The Gunpowder treason and plot;
   I know of no reason
   Why the Gunpowder treason
   Should ever be forgot!
   Guy Fawkes and his companions
   Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
   All up alive.
   Threescore barrels, laid below,
   To prove old England's overthrow.
But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
   A stick and a stake
   For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one,
   I'll take two,
   The better for me,
   And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!

   Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

Math - I am doing Math Mammoth 7 now and I learned about Growing Patterns and expressions/equations, as well as the commutative and associative properties. I also did Hands On
Equations 2 and some Khan and XtraMath.

Makerspace - We worked on designing our tee shirts.  I’m excited about mine.

Art - I finished my pistol drawing and brought it home.

Science - We did some more experiments from our Steve Spangler kit. One where you try and stab a straw into a potato and you can’t do it unless you put a thumb over the top of the straw to keep the air in. A couple of other ones you can see in the videos below. I also did some Uzinggo lessons.

Other - We had a good Thanksgiving. We got together with my mom’s family up at my aunt’s house in Kaysville. Quite a few of my cousins were there.

This is just the first part of my demo speech

"Sticky" Rice experiment--both containers are just regular rice!

This one was really fun. We did it outside in case we made a mess. My littlest brother's attempt didn't work and it spilled.

Weekly Report - Week 12 - 11/11/2017

Language Arts - I turned some of my reasons from last week into a paragraph. I did more TTRS lessons and also did lesson 2 in All About Spelling Level 4. I read the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway book and also the new Nathan Hale Hazardous Tales book, A Raid of No Return. We also watched the movie of A Monster Calls, which is a book my mom read to us last year. The movie was pretty close to the book. Both were good.

Math - I did more Hands On Equations 2 this week. I also did lessons 5 and 6 in Learn Math Fast: Prealgebra. The lessons were on Solving for X with Division and What is Y.

Makerspace - We are learning how to use Inkscape. In class we watched a tutorial and then practiced using it. I practiced some more on my own at home this week.

Art - I finished my paper mache dragon and got to bring it home. See picture below.

Science - We learned about hot air expanding and did a couple of hot air balloon experiments. One we filled a garbage can liner with hot air from a blow dryer and it floated up a few feat. The other we tried to build a simple hot air balloon with half birthday candles, foil, and straws (see video). It kind of worked but didn’t really go up in the air, just was kind of floaty. It was 52 degrees so we are going to try again in December when it is colder. We also are maybe going to get some balsa wood to use in place of the straws because it would be lighter and more sturdy.
In my Uzinggo lessons I learned about heat transfer as well as light and heat. We had already learned about heat transfer in our family science lessons so I knew about that already but it was a good review.

Other - I went to the draft for Provo Jr Jazz basketball and got selected for a team. We start practice next week and games start in December.
